JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (Dec. 19, 2019) -- Members from the 1st Combat Camera Squadron (1CTCS) participated in annual exercise Green Goblin, Dec. 3-7, 2019.
Green Goblin is a low light and no light exercise that is an annual requirement for all members. Low light and night vision photography and videography are unique capabilities that 1CTCS provides to its customers around the world. During Green Goblin, Airmen are put through numerous training lanes that prepare them for potential real world scenarios.
“The exercise was designed for some of our newer people to get their feet wet with a lot of things we do on a daily basis,” Tech. Sgt. Gustavo Castillo, Green Goblin Trainer.
Each day tested a different skillset that the Airmen could potentially need in the future. The first day laid the ground work and prepared the Airmen’s gear for the coming nights.
“We had many Airmen that were putting on equipment for the first time, using equipment for the first time, but hopefully having the more experienced Airmen there helped get them up to speed,” said Castillo.
The second night, teams were sent out into the woods to eight different training lanes in complete darkness with night vision devices, but no additional light was authorized.
“When you’re out and you don’t know what lighting conditions you’re going to have, you need to know how far you can push your camera,” Senior Airman Frank Rohrig, Combat Broadcast Journalist.
During the exercise, 1CTCS partnered with other units on base to provide a more realistic outcome for the trainees. The 628th Security Forces Squadron (628 SFS) demonstrated multiple scenarios that they would potentially respond to. The photographers and videographers participating in the exercise were challenged to document the scenarios as if they would in a real world scenario.
“Our guys were able to follow behind and document, but also were able to operate in a safe environment with Security Forces,” said Castillo. “Having this experience is vital when operating in a deployed environment.”
To ensure a more successful learning environment, exercise planners established teams with a balanced mixture of members with more experience and members with low experience. Each team member was responsible for a specific deliverable each night.
“My hope is that doing this training and doing it in the frequency that we are doing it, will ensure that when these Airmen go to exercises or on real-world mission they know the equipment, and how to use it,” said Castillo.
The goal for the training staff was to successfully equip the squadron with the proper low-light and no-light tools to ensure success down range.
“The night-vision experience I’ve gained from this is invaluable,” said Rohrig.
