HOHENFELS, Germany- Older veterans stood around playing pool, reminiscing about it all- the good the bad the ugly, but ultimately no regrets were spoken because they did it all for their country. Veteran of Foreign Wars Commander of post 10557, Nicholas Hagar welcomed community members to the VFW’s reopening on Feb.11, 2020. Hagar discussed changes to the Hohenfels VFW, grabbing the attention of the community, bringing in members, and building awareness for the non-profit organization. The VFW is comprised of eligible veterans and military service members around the world.

The VFW post 10557 on Hohenfels was established in 1993. It was named in in memory of retired Sgt. 1st Class James F. Griffin. This organization affords members of the Hohenfels VFW community the opportunity to work on their goal of assisting and giving back to all veterans.

The VFW offers a vast variety of assistance services that aim to help all veterans. Programs such as financial grants, student veteran support and their very own VFW mental wellness campaign. The organization has a program called the Military Assistance Program (MAP) which is the bridge between the local VFW and military community, offering support around the world.

“In regard to veterans we help them get the benefits they deserve, for example anything an active duty soldier would get we try to get for our veterans,” said Hagar.

If you’re interested in joining the VFW there are a few requirements that must be met. Those eligible for membership in the VFW are those that have received a campaign medal for overseas service. Member must have served in a combat zone for 90 or more days no matter the branch. Veterans will know they are with others who share similar memories when they attend the facilities.

“The VFW organization is for veteran or active duty service members who have served in combat not just war,” Hagar said. This organization is for those looking for brotherhood and camaraderie amongst people who share similar experiences.

With the newly revamped and reopened Veterans of Foreign Wars facility ready to serve the Hohenfels community and Commander Hager leading the charge, he is looking for all to come out and support this pillar of the Hohenfels community.
