MARYVILLE, TENNESSE (Jan. 26, 2020) – With rain season affecting local dog kennels, twelve Airmen attending Chief Master Sgt. Paul H. Lankford’s Non-Commissioned Officer Academy (NCOA) volunteered at the Blount County Animal Center Jan. 26, 2020.

The Airmen spent four hours shoveling, transporting and patting down gravel to help cover the mud holes in all of the kennels and keep standing water at bay.

Blount County Animal Center volunteer coordinator, Stephanie Garrett expressed how grateful she was for the military volunteers.

“Most of our volunteers are older and it would have taken many months for us to have moved all the rock into the necessary areas,” said Garrett. “The group was amazing and was able to move all the rock in one day along with doing dishes and organizing the storage room used for food.”

After the labor-intensive work, Garrett gave the Airmen plenty of dog treats so they could play with the animals in the restored kennels.

This was a huge bonus for NCOA student Tech. Sgt. Jake Spencer who has been on temporary duty status for nearly a month.

“Being away from home and family, which includes my dogs is difficult,” said Spencer. “Getting to play and love on the dogs at the shelter eased that for me.”

Spencer is one of nearly 250 students attending NCOA at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, Tenn.

This course prepares technical sergeants to lead and manage Air Force units while reminding them of the importance of being involved with their local community.
