BREMERTON, Wash. – Sailors stationed aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) took part in an annual celebration of black history and culture Feb. 20.
Members of the diversity committee organized a Black History Month observance that took place on the barge mess decks.
“We want to bring awareness and teach lessons and tell experiences,” said Logistics Specialist Seaman Lexci Anderson, the president of the diversity committee. “We explored the past and how the past leaders affect us today.”
The event, which was open to all Carl Vinson Sailors, included a poem reading, song, and video of Vinson Sailors explaining the importance and meaning of Black History Month.
“We get to relive the past and learn from our ancestors for a better future,” said Anderson.
Black History Month is celebrated throughout the Navy. This observance took place just weeks after Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly announced the name for the newest aircraft carrier. That ship, CVN 81, will be named after African-American Pearl Harbor hero Petty Officer 3rd Class Doris Miller. This will also be the first aircraft carrier to be named after an enlisted sailor. The ship is scheduled to launch in 2028.
Carl Vinson is currently undergoing an extensive maintenance period in Bremerton, Washington to make upgrades and prepare for future deployments.
