The Virgin Islands National Guard 210th Regiment, Regional Training Institute, concludes its second Water Purification course, St. Croix, Feb. 23, 2020.
The course commenced on January 26. "There were twelve students in this class, and they are from Montana, California, Nevada and New York," said Sgt. 1st Class Kendall Richmond, 92W Course Manager.
The 92W course consists of examinations, classroom, and outdoor training based on phases with various types of equipment. "Phase one covers general water purification history, laboratory operations, storage and distribution operations, and the 3,000 gallons per hour Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit," said Richmond. "Phase two covers the 125 GPH Lightweight Water Purifier and the 1,500 GPH Tactical Water Purification System." Students must achieve a 70 percent or higher for successful completion.
"RTI provides the function for the Army learning concept," said Command Sgt. Maj. Pete Stapleton, commandant for the 210 RTI. The 42,556 square-foot facility houses 38 Soldiers and can feed 150 Soldiers. It was valued at $20 million.
The facility has three classrooms, a gymnasium, one multi-purpose classroom, a library, and a distance learning center. "We can only use one classroom due to damages caused by the 2017 hurricanes at this time," said Stapleton. "The current construction will make the building fully functioning and resume its ability to utilize the three classrooms."
"A lack of a permanent training site has always posed a challenge in having to borrow or share temporary space which doubles as part of the authorized Army Physical Fitness Test route as well as regular traffic and parking," said Richmond. "As far as improvements, we're still utilizing the same area but are working towards finding a permanent site for our Soldiers to train."
There are six certified instructors at RTI. "For further development, we are working on including the Senior Leader Course and Advance Leader Course for a 92W," said Stapleton.
"At the end of each course, we conduct an after action review with the students," said Richmond. "Our goal is to improve and upgrade on the technology to be more in line with the Army Learning Concept as we head further into the 21st century."
Approximately 121 Soldiers have graduated from the 92W course at RTI since its first class in 2014. There are two more 92W courses scheduled for the remainder of the fiscal year.
