Marines with Echo Battery, 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, commemorated Presidents Day with a 21-gun salute at William Pendleton Thomas Field on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Feb. 17, 2020.
Service members and their families attended the ceremony in patriotic celebration of the presidents who have lead the United States throughout the years.
“It is an absolute honor for myself and the Marines to be able to carry on not only this tradition, but every tradition the Marine Corps has adopted since 1775,” said 2nd Lt. Daniel Lastra, officer in charge for Echo Battery, 2/10. “Presidents Day is a time for Americans to honor past presidents who have served, as well as give respects to our current president and future presidents who will lead this country in the right direction.”
The holiday, observed the third Monday in February, was formerly known as Washington’s Birthday. Later the day earned the name “Presidents Day” as part of the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
The 21-gun salute has long since been a Naval tradition; Navy regulations cite on Presidents Day each year, each saluting ship, naval station, and installation having a saluting battery shall fire a national salute of 21-guns. During a 21-gun salute, the guns are discharged at five-second intervals 21 times.
“When people see the 21-gun salute, I want them to know that the Marine Corps takes great pride in honoring the United States and the leaders who have molded this country into what it is today,” said Capt. Joshua Rehak, legal support specialist with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations East-MCB Camp Lejeune.
