Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Feb. 20 to commemorate the opening of the newly upgraded Mina Salman Pier (MSP).

American and Bahraini senior officers and government officials attended the ceremony at MSP.

The event was held to recognize the opening of a pier with enhanced capabilities to support maritime operations in the U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) area of responsibility (AOR).

Capt. Greg Smith, commanding officer of NSA Bahrain, began the event with a speech and proceeded to cut the ribbon, marking the official opening of the pier.

“The upgrades we’ve made to this pier will allow the installation to better support U.S. and coalition maritime operations throughout the USCENTCOM AOR,” said Smith. “We can now provide more efficient and effective shore services to the U.S. Fifth Fleet and our 31 coalition partners working here to ensure freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce through the region.”

NSA Bahrain’s public works department and their partners in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Middle-East District spearheaded the construction project.

“The upgrades we’ve made include expanded berthing and pier service capabilities to homeported and visiting ships,” said Cmdr. Jon Higdon, NSA Bahrain’s public works officer.

The pier is now able to support all Navy, Coast Guard, and other U.S. and coalition vessels, with the exception of aircraft carriers.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Smith not only discussed the importance of the pier but also of the relationship shared between the U.S. Navy and the Kingdom of Bahrain.

“… We could not be standing here today without our outstanding partner and host nation, the Kingdom of Bahrain,” said Smith. “The Mina Salman Pier is yet another example of our enduring partnership.”

NSA Bahrain’s mission is to support U.S. and coalition maritime operations throughout the USCENTCOM AOR by providing security for ships, aircraft, and tenants onboard NSA Bahrain and assigned attachments. NSA Bahrain provides efficient and effective shore services to sustain the fleet, enable the fighter, and support the family with honor, courage and commitment.
