FT. BRAGG, N.C. – Master Sgt. Matthew O. Williams was promoted to the rank of Sgt. Maj. during a ceremony at the Col. Aaron Bank Hall, Ft. Bragg, N.C. Feb. 28, 2020. The ceremony included distinguished guests, visitors, Williams’ family, teammates and friends.
“Today we recognize a great Soldier who is incredibly humble,” said Col. Nathan J. Prussian, commander of 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne).
On Oct. 30, 2019 Williams was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for combat valor, for his acts of gallantry during combat operations in Afghanistan.
Williams’ ability to serve and lead in and out of combat was reflected during his promotion ceremony.
“There is not a more deserving person in the force to receive a promotion of this magnitude,” said Prussian.
After the publishing of the official order, Master Sgt. Williams’ new rank was pinned onto his chest by his wife.
Ever the quiet professional and humble leader, Williams’ brief speech focused on his teammates and his dedication to further service.
“It’s been an honor to serve at 3rd [Special Forces] Group and rise through the ranks,” said Williams. “I am looking forward to continuing to lead and serve the regiment and do the best I can to develop, mentor, advise, and bring up Green Berets.”
Williams will continue to serve within the Special Forces community as a Sgt. Maj.
