The Auto Hobby Center, here, provides the assistance and tools that anyone with access to Beale Air Force Base needs to work on their vehicles.

The Auto Hobby Center is different from other mechanic shops in that the mechanics will assist anyone that wants to learn how to do the work themselves.

“To simplify it we do everything except total teardown and rebuild of engines, transmissions or differentials,” said Ray McBrayer, 9th Force Support Squadron mechanic. “That means tune ups, minor engine repair, transmission R&R, clutches, brakes, fuel pumps and more. Basically if it's not an engine rebuild we can do anything to it.”

In addition to working on cars, the staff at the Auto Hobby Center teach and assist people doing the work themselves.

“Some people prefer their own hands on,” said McBrayer. “And sometimes people just want to learn. There used to be a guy that came here. At first he didn't even know how to change the oil. So we taught him how to change his oil. Then one day he had an exhaust leak. We went through and walked him through how to do it. Basically he tore out the whole exhaust and fixed it. The last time I saw him he was teaching other people how to change their oil.”

Taking time to help others learn has several benefits, said McBrayer.

“It just makes it easier for everybody if people have an idea of what’s going on,” said McBrayer. “We will get cars that have gone to shops out in town. The off base shops will tell these people that they need this and that when they really don’t.

Mechanics at the Auto Hobby Center try to teach people to not just be told what is wrong with their vehicle, but to be able to help themselves to a degree.

“We’re here to help you guys,” said McBrayer. “You guys are here because you have a mission. If you didn’t have the mission you wouldn’t be here. If you weren't here you’d be back home doing what you do, but no you're here serving your country. So we’re here to make your life a little easier.”
