Mobility’s Hometown showcased the Mighty 97th’s mission, Airmen and community to the command team of Air Education and Training Command during their visit here on Jan. 8, 2020.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Brad Webb, commander of AETC, and Chief Master Sgt. Julie Gudgel, command chief of AETC, along with their spouses Dawna and Robb respectively, were given the chance to see the base and visit with Airmen first-hand to learn about the wing’s goals and focus areas for the new year.
“Mobility’s Hometown is the key to obtaining global reach for our nation’s Air Force,” said Webb. “This wing is a unique and important part of AETC’s role and I’m excited to learn about what the 97th is working on to better train our future Airmen.”
Getting to visit the home of the formal training unit of the KC-46 Pegasus, C-17 Globemaster III and the KC-135 Stratotanker gave the AETC leaders a closer look at what the Mighty 97th is doing to shape Mobility Airmen.
“This place is the first stop in the development for the next generation of Mobility Airmen,” said Webb. “Altus AFB is crucial in developing trained Airmen and that priority goes second to none.”
Webb and Gudgel spent part of the visit meeting in smaller groups with Airmen to discuss the wing’s day-to-day training mission and the stories behind the members who get the mission done.
“Every time I come back to Altus my favorite part of the base is its people” said Gudgel. “Everyone is a working part in the mission and I can tell that the Airmen here are proud of the work they do. The units that I visited are really close to each other and truly care for one another.”
Interacting with several Airmen, both active duty and civilian, provided a better perspective on how the Mighty 97th’s mission ties into AETC’s recently released priorities.
“Our goal at AETC is to recruit, train, and educate exceptional Airmen and those efforts are apparent here with the innovation seen across the wing,” said Webb. “Each Airman is crucial in executing the mission. The base is proud of its heritage and that is still apparent today.”
To understand the progress and improvements made for quality of life initiatives at the wing, the AETC command team toured several base facilities where renovations took place in 2019.
“If we expect our Airmen to perform, we need to provide them with the basic necessities to do their jobs,” said Gudgel. “This is a volunteer force and when members join, so do their family. Airmen will make their desires happen on the outside if we can’t give that to them. I’m proud to see all of the ways leadership has accomplished quality of life improvements and that Airmen have been giving feedback. This is truly a base where you can see how much pride people have in the work they do to make things better.”
