African American history and the history of the United States Army are so tightly woven together that there cannot be one without the other. African Americans have been serving in the Army since the Revolutionary War and continue to contribute to the growth of today’s modern Army.
The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, hosted this year’s African American History Month observation at the Woodruff Theater, Fort Stewart, Georgia, on Feb.26, 2020.
“We celebrate Black History Month to honor those who came before us and celebrate how far we have come as a society,” said retired Command Sgt. Maj. Jesse Andrews, the keynote speaker at the event. “But we also honor those who continue to struggle today.”
The event was kicked off with a video tribute to African American History Month, which led to a reflection on key African American Soldiers through history whose actions have had an impact on Soldiers today.
The reflection had Soldiers dressed in period correct uniforms on stage with a photo of the Soldier they were representing behind them on a projector as the narrator shared the heroic actions of the Soldiers being honored.
Celebrating African American History month helps Soldiers understand the struggles the African American community has endured and the contributions they have provided to the Army said Sgt. Chetina Chavis, a Soldier assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division.
After the reflection, Andrews took the stage and began speaking. He dove into the history of how African Americans have contributed to the military and shared some of his own experiences through his military career.
Andrews speech reflected on the key individuals who played important roles in the African American civil rights movements through history. He stressed the importance of knowing history and understanding it so as not to make the same mistake twice.
“We honor the past to secure the future,” Andrews said.
