Operations Specialist 1st Class Petty Officer Donald 'Joe' Huson recently received his first Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal Feb. 27 at an awards ceremony held at Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex.

Huson has been in the U.S. Navy for over 13 years and for the past three years he has been serving as the Training Support Center Hampton Roads (TSCHR) facilities manager and leading petty officer.

During his tenure at TSCHR, he led 26 junior Sailors through the reorganization of the facilities department and maintenance for 69 buildings encompassing 2.2 million square feet. His mentorship resulted in four advancements, six Junior Sailors of the Quarter, and one Blue Jacket of the Year.

Additionally, he played an integral role in the safe evacuation of 750 students from Dam Neck in preparation for Hurricanes Florence and Dorian.

Brian White, TSCHR facilities director, said, “Petty Officer Huson is most deserving of this award, he basically takes the lead and runs the shop.”

Huson is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Donald Huson, Vinton, Va.

“I absolutely plan on making the Navy a career,” said Huson. “My Dad retired as a Machinist Mate 1st Class after 21 years of serving his country.”

“I’m very proud of my Dad, he was named Sailor of the Year Navy-Wide, so joining the Navy for me, felt like the right thing to do,” said Huson.
