DRAWSKO POMORSKIE- U.S. Army soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, gathered with Polish soldiers from the Drawsko Land Forces Training Center and 2nd Mechanized Brigade, to commemorate the liberation of Drawsko on its 75th anniversary.
The town was controlled by German forces during World War II, and was nearly destroyed during the liberation battle that took place on March 4, 1945.
Among those participating in the wreath laying ceremony were U.S. Army Col. Patrick O’Neal, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Col. Paul McCarthy, 561st Regional Sustainment Group, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Lt. Col. Ryan Perusich, Drawsko Pomorskie Training Area Coordination Center Deputy Commander, 1st Infantry Division Forward and Krzysztof Czerwinski, Mayor of Drawsko Pomorskie.
“Today is a great day to pay tribute to not only our soldiers, but also our civilians who endured the tragic history,” said Czerwinski. “This is a great occasion to say thank you to the U.S. soldiers who are attending the ceremony.”
U.S. and Polish soldiers, as well as local citizens, paid their respects to the fallen Polish service members by placing candles and wreaths on their headstones.
