NASHVILLE, Tenn. — After serving 39 years in the Army, both on active and reserve duty, Col. Gregory Simpson was awarded the Legion of Merit, July 19, at the Army Reserve center in Nashville.
Simpson graduated from US Army Aviation School in 1970 and served as a MEDVAC pilot with the 1st Cavalry Division from 1970-71, which included a combat tour in Vietnam. After spending two years on active duty, Simpson served 33 years in the Tennessee Army National Guard before joining the Army Reserve.
In September 2005, he became a member of the 332nd Medical Brigade serving as the G-1, adjutant general, before taking command of the 5th Medical Group, Birmingham, Ala., in March 2008. Simpson retired from the Army Reserve, Dec. 31, 2008.
"I continuously sought challenging duty positions commensurate with my diverse experience and education," said Simpson. He held a top secret security clearance until his retirement from military service.
In his civilian career Simpson has worked with Thompson Machinery, including Caterpillar, since September 1978, as a Learjet pilot and currently as a safety director. Col. Simpson, a resident of Brentwood, Tenn., has a wife Jane, two adult children and three grandchildren.
