ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – (March 25, 2020) – Florida National Guard Soldiers and Airmen stay vigilant in their pursuit to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.

Personnel operating at the Joint Operations Center in the Robert F. Ensslin Armory share confidence in the Florida National Guard’s ability to avert COVID-19’s damage. They also note how this pandemic is being treated compared to Florida’s usual hurricane response.

“We’re subject matter experts when it comes to disaster response,” said U.S. Army Capt. Michael Zorrilla, a section chief with the JOC. “It’s something we’re very capable of doing, considering we’re an expeditionary force. It’s the same mindset when we fight overseas, we take the best practices and apply them here at home.”

Junior enlisted members of the FLNG share that their command staff is capable when it comes to responding to the pandemic.

“The commanders are doing a great job,” said Airman 1st Class Brenton Dosio, a mission manager at the JOC. “They give all of us positive reinforcement throughout each day. When they want information, they want it fast, and they're capable of really using that information to move the mission forward.”

Commanders operating at the JOC feel Florida is more than equipped to withstand the necessary actions needed to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The military in general is very good at making decisions rapidly in a chaotic and challenging environment,” said U.S. Army Col. Robert Carruthers, the Joint Task Force Commander at the JOC. “We’re trained to operate in a challenging environment that something like war would present. This pandemic is a great unknown and presents the same uncertainty and fear into people that war would. Our training and experience with disasters like hurricanes equips Florida to be able to manage situations like these very well.”

“Our citizens should be safe and practice social distancing. Have confidence that we’ll get over this. The National Guard, first responders, and medical staff are doing the best they can and are doing a great job.”
