WIESBADEN, Germany-- If you have visited an Exchange store or "shoppette" throughout the U.S. Army Europe footprint, you've likely noticed new procedures to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. At the Clay Kaserne Troop Store, Soldiers will greet you not with a cart, but with hand sanitizer.

These soldiers are there as part of U.S.Army Europe's evolving procedures to flatten the COVID-19 curve and maintain the readiness of its forces while dealing with the virus.

“Having the assistance of these service members is greatly appreciated,” said Col. Scott McFarland, the Exchange’s Europe and Southwest Asia commander.

The Exchange has implemented many COVID-19 precautions, including installing acrylic shields at points of sale, increasing sanitization efforts, and emplacing visual reminders to shoppers and associates to practice social distancing.

"The Exchange is proud to serve those families who serve—and the community’s well-being is our No. 1 priority," said McFarland.

Soldiers selected for the detail ensure customers wash and sanitize their hands prior to entering the facility adhere to social distancing guidance, and the store is held to 10-person capacity.

“It is important to sanitize as much as possible to limit the germs, especially in a public place like the 'shoppette',” Staff Sgt. Stanley Allen, a geospatial intelligence imagery analyst with Alpha Company, 24th Military Intelligence Battalion, said. “Working this detail contributes to the bigger picture of flattening the curve for COVID-19 across Europe.”

A flatter curve for COVID-19 means slowing down the infection rate which eases stress off health care systems and resources.

Pvt. Joao Kratochvil, an information technology specialist with Charlie Company, 2nd Military Intelligence Battalion, describes flattening the curve metaphorically.

“A bathroom only has so many stalls," Kratochvil said. "If everyone decides to go at the same time, it creates a problem.

"But, if the same number of people go over a period of time, the problem is mitigated,” Kratochvil said. “In saying this, I think the steps we’re taking are very important in limiting the spread and will prove to be effective.”
