WEST PALM BEACH – (April 10, 2020) – The citizen-soldiers of the Florida National Guard are vigilant in their effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19. The 53rd Brigade Support Battalion takes special care to ensure that is so within their own ranks.

The 53rd BSB works every day to make sure that COVID-19 does not spread among the Soldiers that are assisting with community-based COVID-19 testing sites in Palm Beach County. Lt. Col. Eduardo Vazquez, the battalion physician assistant with Charlie Company of the 53rd BSB, said it’s important for his Soldiers to understand and put action to the guidelines set by the CDC.

“Social distancing, of course, is one of the key things that we’re doing,” said Vazquez. “We’re encouraging our Soldiers to wash their hands frequently, and at every meal they have dedicated hand washing stations with soap and water or hand sanitizer. In addition, we’re doing twice a day temperature checks to see if our Soldiers are developing signs or symptoms of COVID-19.”

Soldiers are also given personal protective equipment such as facial masks and gloves to help them stay safe in their work environment. Soldiers like Staff Sgt. Shannon Bridges, a full-time training NCO with HHC of the 53rd BSB, are tasked with issuing temperature checks to Soldiers of the 53rd BSB twice a day.

“Following the CDC’s latest guidelines is very important for us,” said Bridges. “Since we’re out in the limelight of everything, we want to ensure that it’s clear that we’re doing everything we can to minimize the spread of this pandemic.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the leading national public health institute of the United States. It’s vitally important for the Soldiers of the 53rd BSB to stay up to date and follow these guidelines, in addition to holding each other accountable when it comes to safety.

“It’s important for us to follow the guidelines set by the CDC,” said Vazquez. “They are the subject matter experts when it comes to health and safety, analyzing thousands and thousands of samples of data every day to determine what the best course of action is for us to follow. I personally review the CDC guidelines every day to see what has changed and what I can do as the medical advisor to the commander and to the battalion on how we can be better prepared to minimize the spread of this disease.”

It’s important to stay safe and follow the guidelines promoted by the CDC. From maintaining a safe distance, cleaning your hands often, and wearing appropriate protective gear, one can minimize the risk presented to them in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
