MIAMI – Florida Army National Guard Col. Ricardo Roig, Commander of the 50th Regional Support Group, awarded City of Miami Assistant Fire Chief Scott Dean, a member of the department of fire rescue special operations division, the Florida Commendation Medal for his support of the state’s COVID-19 mission in South Florida.

The Florida Guard has been working closely with federal, state and local authorities during COVID-19 response, and Chief Dean’s service as the incident commander of the Marlins Park Community Based Testing Site (CBTS) has been invaluable. In this capacity, Dean has worked closely with the Miami Police Department, the Florida National Guard, Marlins Stadium staff, the Department of Health, Jackson Memorial Hospital and Urban Search and Rescue Florida Task Force II.

“It’s an unfortunate time for our country but I do believe that during tough times Americans step up to the challenge and unite as one. I feel like everyone in the country is working together to fight this virus,” said Dean. “It has been a true honor to work alongside everyone in the Florida Guard as well as the community. The Guard is unique because they have the ability to make anything happen and they never say ‘no.’”

Chief Dean worked efficiently and tirelessly to ensure the logistics, supplies and equipment were ordered and in place to stand up the COVID-19 testing site at the Marlins Park CBTS. Dean also continues to run the testing site in an exemplary and flawless manner since its opening in March, and continues to support the site and the Soldiers with enthusiasm and dedication.

“We are proud of the work Chief Dean has done with the Florida National Guard at the Marlins Park testing site,” said Francis Suarez, Mayor of the City of Miami. “We hope we can build upon this partnership with the Guard, especially as our city looks to continue expanding services to our residents during the COVID-19 emergency.”

The Florida National Guard has more than 2,200 Guardsmen on orders in support of Florida’s COVID-19 response, and are operating seven Community Based Testing Sites (CBTS) that have administered more than 29,000 sample collections to date.
