MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- Lt. Gen Samuel T. Helland, Commanding General of 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, recently presented a I MEF Marine with the Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award June 25.
Cpl. Jason D. Holl, I MEF protocol noncommissioned officer, stood out from more than 600 Marines around the Corps eligible to win the leadership award. He was able to win through the glowing recommendations from his peers describing his leadership ability and personal character.
"There has never been a more important time in our nation's history to recognize and to honor the leaders in our Corps," said Barbara Woodbury, President of the Navy and Marine Association.
"The Navy and Marine Association is proud to have that opportunity, and we especially enjoy sponsoring the 'peer selected' leaders of I MEF. This particular peer-selected award was to recognize Corporal Jason Holl, a most impressive Marine."
Alan M. Nary, the I MEF Protocol officer-in-charge and Holl's supervisor, described the Fort Worth, TX., native as an outstanding and highly independent Marine capable of completing all assigned tasks with very minimal guidance from superiors. And as the protocol NCO for I MEF, completing these tasks is no easy feat.
As one of the three Marine Expeditionary Forces, the Marine Corps' primary war fighting organization, I MEF holds much responsibility on its shoulders. Due to the vital role that I MEF plays in the Marine Corps, the unit regularly welcomes many VIPs into its ranks.
Holl's primary responsibilities include ensuring that I MEF's high-profile visitors are taken care of during their stay.
"We have everybody from four star generals to representatives from the house," said Holl. "The vice president even came here once. We set up their whole visit—where they're going to go, what they're going to do and who they're going to see. Then we execute everything."
Although arranging transportation, housing and food for I MEF's visitors keep him busy, Holl says he finds his role in the Marine Corps very rewarding.
Before joining the Marine Corps, the Fossil Ridge High School graduate played basketball and played on the varsity football and track teams. Afterwards, Holl decided to follow in his family's footsteps by enlisting in the military.
"My grandfather was a Marine, and this has always been something I've wanted to do with my life," said Holl.
In addition to receiving the leadership award, Holl also received an honorary one-year membership in the Navy and Marine Association.
