Leaders of the 2nd Bomb Wing took the time to listen to Airmen who presented ideas to improve mission operations, be it financial, increasing lethality, or overall effectiveness, during its Spark Tank competition.
Spark Tank is a yearly competition calling for Airmen to share ideas with wing leadership to present solutions or ideas that could better impact the wing's mission.
There were a total of eight innovative ideas presented with hopes to decrease manpower hours and boost morale. The 2020 Spark Tank competition resulted in multiple contenders receiving support and funds from leadership.
Staff Sgt. Ronald Marsh, 2nd Logistics Readiness Squadron mission planner, presented his idea of additional magnetometers for air terminal operations management.
"Trying to think of things we could do to better benefit us and make our process smoother, more efficient - this was the perfect idea to do that,” Marsh said.” Basically, my passion for what I presented speaks to me more being that I love what I do. I'm nervous really. I don't like speaking in front of people so this whole thing has been kind of nerve racking for me.”
Marsh presented with two other members of the 2nd LRS to include Master Sgt. Travis Fowles, 2nd LRS section chief of air transportation, who was the only presenter. Even though Fowles did not get approved for funding, 2nd Mission Support Group Commander Col. Sara Ann Custer did offer to make his innovation a reality.
“We took a shot. We’re all a little anxious. I think we were all a little nervous going up there,” Fowles said. “More than anything I think that this was a development opportunity to get out there.”
Leadership gave away a total of $480,000 during this year's iteration of Spark Tank.
All competitors took a risk but the new developments for their shops are well worth it. Leadership is looking forward to seeing the money put to use and how it will improve the mission as well as the innovations that will come in the future.
