Defense Department Support to FEMA COVID-19

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact thousands of Americans across the Northeast, local hospitals begin to face shortages of medical personnel and facilities within the region.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania took action to combat these shortages by requesting federal support to continue to fight against COVID-19. Through coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Defense positioned Task Forces, consisting of active and reserve military personnel, to work alongside state National Guard forces as well as Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Services professionals.

U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. R. Scott Lambe, the Task Force-Southeast deputy commander, joined FEMA region III and PEMS personnel in conducting pre-deployment site surveys of alternate care sites erected for swift medical response.

“TF-SE is here today to provide assistance to the state of Pennsylvania,” Lambe said. “We are here to conduct an alternate care site assessment and help the community continue to stay healthy, so we can live for a better tomorrow.”

Assisting in an alternate care site survey located inside Temple University was the FEMA Region III Administrator MaryAnn Tierney. Together, they documented progress and discussed overall serviceability of the Liacouras Center facility.

“We work with our military partners not just through national disasters but every day in order to better understand our capabilities,” Tierney said. “FEMA has a small staff; we don’t have all of the specialties the military has, so the military is a real force multiplier and a mission enabler for us.”

With military, federal and state medical personnel working together to combat the pandemic, their partnership and teamwork has helped establish a stronghold of resources for Pennsylvanians in need of aid.
