MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (April 22, 2020) - Joint Task Force Aide (JTFA) Florida Guard doctors, nurses and medics joined the Army Trauma Training Detachment (ATTD) team at the Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) to conduct refresher training in preparation of receiving patients at the MCC alternate care facility.

“We are doing skills training for things we have learned in the past however some processes have changed so it’s important to re-visit these tasks for the COVID-19 response,” said Air National Guard Senior Master Sgt. Jose L. Valverde, Aerospace Medical Superintendent, 125th Medical Group. “Having the Army Trauma Training team has been a privilege and the training has been exceptional.”

The Guard reached out to the ATTD to provide refresher training so that providers from different specialties could enhance their knowledge in proper intravenous (IV) placement and airway management that are specific to the COVID-19 response. Providers have come from all over Florida with different skills from surgeons to general practitioners.

ATTD, located in Miami, Fla., has two main missions, teaching the Army Trauma Training Course (ATTC) which is geared toward pre-deployment readiness for surgical teams, and a military-civilian partnership by working as medical providers at Ryder Trauma Center Jackson Memorial.

“We do a lot of team building and basic training to medical providers and this particular training is geared to support the COVID-19 response,” said Army Lt. Col. Mark Buzzelli, Program Director Army Trauma Training Detachment. “This is a unique experience, we are working with a tremendous group and we have come together for a common goal.”

The Florida National Guard has more than 2,300 Guardsmen on duty in support of Florida’s COVID-19 response. Soldiers and Airmen are currently operating nine Community Based Testing Sites locations, and have administered over 61,000 sample collections to date at those sites. In addition, the Guard is deploying Mobile Testing Teams to carry out COVID-19 testing at assisted living communities and is supporting the Florida Department of Health’s screening operations at seven Florida airports.
