Florida National Guard Soldiers are conducting vehicle maintenance to ensure the Florida Guard is ready for movement at any time for any reason. During the COVID-19 response, Guardsmen have been mobilized across the state to support a variety of operations and proper maintenance plays a big role in ensuring they are mission ready.

“Maintenance is extremely important for the safety of our Soldiers,” said Sgt. Joshua Goodwin 160th Transportation Company wheeled vehicle mechanic. “We ensure the vehicles are ready for any mission that may come up.”

Wheeled vehicle mechanics are the backbone of the Guard’s maintenance program and their primary mission is to assist units in performing preventative maintenance checks and services (PMCS) and provide recovery support on their vehicles and their associated trailers or equipment.

They also inspect, service, maintain, repair, replace, adjust and test wheeled vehicles. They conduct routine PMCS such as oil changes and repair damaged items when necessary.

The Army National Guard owns approximately 50,000 wheeled vehicles. During state emergencies Guard members drive these vehicles for several reasons to include distribution of supplies, rescue operations and transport.

“Readiness is key to the success of the Florida Guard,” said Spc. Kevin Rosario 160th Transportation Company wheeled vehicle mechanic. “Keeping the vehicles regularly maintained ensures a timely response to any emergency or mission.”

The Florida National Guard has more than 2,800Guardsmen on duty in support of Florida’s COVID-19 response. Soldiers and Airmen are currently operating nine Community Based Testing Sites locations, and have administered over 65,000 sample collections to date at those sites. In addition, the Guard is deploying Mobile Testing Teams to carry out COVID-19 testing at assisted living communities and is supporting the Florida Department of Health’s screening operations at seven Florida airports.
