MADISON, Wis. — Maj. Gen. Paul E. Knapp, Wisconsin’s adjutant general, announced today that Brig. Gen. David W. May will assume the role of Wisconsin’s deputy adjutant general for Air.
May currently serves as the commander of Volk Field Air National Guard Base, in Camp Douglas, Wisconsin, which includes the Combat Readiness Training Center, the 128th Air Control Squadron, and the 126th Weather Flight, and he succeeds Brig. Gen. Gary L. Ebben, who retired in February after nearly four decades of service.
With this appointment, May received a promotion to brigadier general effective April 16, and he assumes responsibility for the more than 2,300 Airmen of the Wisconsin Air National Guard including flying wings in Milwaukee and Madison, and the combat readiness training center at Volk Field.
As the deputy adjutant general for air, he serves as the chief advisor to the adjutant general on all matters pertaining to Wisconsin Air National Guard programs, policies, operations, management and command and control of the Wisconsin Air National Guard. He also provides staff assistance guidance and direction concerning Air National Guard personnel, administration, training, recruiting and retention, and budgetary matters.
“Brig. Gen. May is a fantastic officer, and he is exactly the kind of leader we need at the helm of the Wisconsin Air National Guard,” Knapp said. “He is a true professional, and I look forward to him taking the organization to new heights in the coming years.”
May’s 24 years of service in the Air Force and Wisconsin Air National Guard began in 1996, when he received his commission through the Air Force Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. He has held a variety of command and staff positions at the wing, combatant command, air staff, and joint force headquarters level.
His staff tours include Headquarters US Air Force, the Pentagon, Headquarters Air Force Cyber Command (Provisional), U.S. Transportation Command, and the Joint Force Headquarters of the Wisconsin National Guard.
He has deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom including assignments with the Joint Special Operations Task Force-Horn of Africa at Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, and U.S. Air Forces Central Command at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
Previous assignments in the Wisconsin National Guard include deputy director of domestic operations, plans and training, commander of the 54th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team, and director of manpower and personnel.
May is a joint qualified officer and holds a doctorate in human resource management.

An assumption of authority ceremony will be planned for a later time.
