The Legal Assistance Office aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton provides a variety of legal resources to service members and their families. In recognition of their hard work, the office has been named the Legal Assistance Office of the Year by the American Bar Association. This national award is a tribute to the outstanding level of service that the Legal Assistance Office provides for Marines, sailors, and their families.
The Camp Pendleton Legal Assistance Office assisted approximately 2,910 clients in 2019. In addition to the traditional core legal assistance services that the offices are judged upon, the association cited three services that distinguished the Camp Pendleton office from their counterparts across the Corps.
The first is Camp Pendleton’s immigration and naturalization services. The Legal Assistance Office assisted 854 clients with immigration naturalization related issues in 2019.
Second is the office’s providing of free mediations for Californian Divorces, helping 78 families produce Martial Separation Agreements accepted by California Family Law Courts.
The third distinguishing service is in support of the Exceptional Family Member Program. The Legal Assistance Office works with supporting children of service members with learning or physical disabilities receive federally mandated services. The Exceptional Family Member Program conducted 1,034 case consultations and 1,249 Individual Education Program meetings in 2019.
“This award means a lot and is a validation of the dedicated work that the staff has endured over this last year,” said Major Arthur Chapman, Legal Assistance Officer in Charge MCB Camp Pendleton. “I’m proud of all the work that they did.”
Facing an increase in demand from the surrounding areas, the staff of the Legal Assistance Office worked diligently to complete their mission of supporting service members. The Legal Assistance Office supports clients in the greater San Diego area, to include Twentynine Palms, California, and Yuma, Arizona.
“It was a heavy density year for us,” said Major Chapman, “We had an increased demand from the people we serve.”
By having multiple programs all operating under one roof, the office provides more services than other legal assistance offices across the Corps. Working together, the sections within the Legal Assistance Office can offer a variety of legal services that the military community needs. Clients can work through various legal issues from the same building, ensuring that service members and their families have access to the programs that they need.
