MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — One way individuals differ from each other is by the way they express themselves through creativity. Here, becoming a creative individual is made easier at the Marine Corps Community Services Arts and Crafts Hobby Shop.
"The hobby shop is here to offer the Marines, Sailors and family members alternative recreational activities," said Angela M. Frasier, the manager of the MCCS Arts and Crafts Hobby Shop. "All skill levels and ages are welcome."
The 6,000 square foot arts and crafts facility offers a variety of activities ranging from woodworking, ceramics and pottery, digital photography lessons and provides private birthday rooms at a reasonable price.
"Kids don't always have arts and crafts activities in school due to budget restrictions during these tough economic times," said Frasier, 26, from Oceanside, Calif. "At the hobby shop, we offer these activities at a very affordable price or free."
All projects are available with assistance from trained instructors who can answer any questions, inspire and help expand creativity to the arts and crafts seekers of the Camp Pendleton community.
"The hobby shop is a fun place to discover new hobbies," said Brittni N. Young, 23, from Oceanside, Calif., a recreational assistant with the MCCS Arts and Crafts Hobby Shop. "We're here to help people create projects they never thought they could do."
The hobby shop has all the equipment needed for many projects. Classes and lessons are available for arts and crafts enthusiasts to help educate them about the equipment and materials they will use.
"I enjoy coming to the hobby shop because I don't have any woodworking tools," said Cpl. Mariusz M. Martynowicz, 22, from Chicago, a vehicle mechanic with Motor Transport Maintenance Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group. "They have everything here that someone would need to complete any woodworking project."
The hobby shop offers a friendly and spacious environment to work on projects at the customers' own pace, and patrons can enjoy their creativity in a stress-free atmosphere.
"I absolutely enjoy coming here because I can take it easy, relax and work on projects," said Capt. Andrew H. Armstrong, 30, from Shutesbury, Mass., the S-3 officer with Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division.
The hobby shop is scheduled to start classes this fall on glass forming, candle and soap making, and knitting. For more information about upcoming classes, and the shop, visit their website at www.camppendletonhobbyshop.com or call (760) 725-4880.
