KABUL, Afghanistan — An International Security Assistance Force service member died of wounds suffered in a direct fire incident with insurgents that occurred in southern Afghanistan yesterday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends of this dedicated service member. We will not forget his sacrifice," said Brig. Gen. Eric Tremblay, ISAF spokesperson.

"ISAF and the Afghan national security forces are conducting operations in the south to clear, hold, build and create the right security situation in time for the elections, and generate lasting effects on the ground so to allow alternatives to be offered to Afghans."

It is ISAF policy not to release the nationality of any casualty prior to the relevant national authority doing so.
