FORT LEE, Va. (May 26, 2020) -- A Dental Clinic Command Soldier here has been selected to attend the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School at West Point, N.Y.
Spc. Xingyu Chen, a New York City native with aspirations to become an Army dentist, received confirmation of his acceptance roughly two months ago via email.
“I was kind of shocked,” said the 20-year-old. “I wasn’t 100 percent positive I was going to be accepted, but when I was, I thought, ‘Maybe anything is possible through hard work.’”
As its name implies, USMAPS prepares high school graduates and enlisted personnel for the heavy training and disciplinary rigors of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious service academy. Admission requirements for the school include nomination from a congressional member or commander (if enlisted), a medical exam and candidate fitness assessment, and acceptable SAT or ACT scores. The school has an average enrollment of about 240 students.
There is no cost to attend USMAPS, and students receive a stipend. Soldiers continue to earn pay at their enlisted grades. Those who complete the 10 months of training, move on to the respective officer academies for their branch of service. A West Point education is worth roughly $349,000 per student, according to a Government Accounting Office report. Graduates are obligated to five years of active duty.
Chen, due to report to USMAPS in July, said he has mentally and physically prepared for his journey, routinely working out and pouring over texts from his high school years.
“I’ve been looking back at my school work to catch up on everything,” said the admitted science buff who completed college-level courses in high school.
If he makes it through the academy, Chen plans to attend dental school to become a doctor.
