FORT CARSON, Colo.- Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, rolled out in convoys from the Motorpool and headed to the Mission Training Center, Monday, June 15, 2020, Fort Carson, Colorado. The vehicles were staged and ready to go since the week prior, in preparation for Command Post Exercise (CPX), the first of four exercises coming up in the months ahead.
The exercises are designed to help validate the command posts’ capabilities, said Staff Sgt. John Cushman, the third serial convoy commander, assigned with Headquarters Support Company, HHBN, 4th Inf. Div. -- which means he is responsible for all tasks necessary to ensure the convoy leaves on time and arrives safely.
Each of the CPXs, 0-3, are how the division command posts pre-test their readiness, before taking the division on a trial run during Warfighter, a division-wide exercise which simulates situations in the field.
“All these preparations are rehearsals for Warfighter,” said 1st Lt. Cali Palumbo, the executive officer for HSC, HHBN, 4th Inf. Div., and Beechmaster of CPX 0, “We make sure that our maintenance is good, that our comms are good, our equipment is good, and that the unit is ready.”
Readiness is an important, integral component of the military.
“You don’t know if your Division Headquarters can deploy and operate in a large scale combat operation against an adversary, unless you take all your trucks and tents, plug everything in and make sure that it all works,” Cushman said. “America has to be able to count on its Army to get up and go when it is needed to whatever location it is needed. Readiness is key in our ability to project power, further political and American interests and ensure global security, and protect resources.”
