(CLERMONT, Fla.) – Canvassing Recruiters across Recruiting Station Tampa search for those select few individuals who are able to earn the title of United States Marine. Only a small percentage of the general population understands what it means to earn that title. Staff Sgt. Gabriel Osorio, a Houston native, earned that title several years ago. However, Gabriel recently earned another title – the title of parent. The title of parent has some similarities to the title of Marine. Some of these include responsibility, sacrifice, and dedication.
Gabriel, a canvassing recruiter, with Recruiting Substation Leesburg, Recruiting Station Tampa, and his wife, Mayra Cuevas Osorio, welcomed a new baby boy into the world. His name is Emmanuel Bryant Osorio, and he was born on June, 1, 2020. The couple were overwhelmed with joy over the arrival of their first child.
Gabriel discussed some of the similarities and differences between being a father, a Marine, and how he feels to be both.
“Being a father and being a Marine is different because not too many people enlist in the military,” Gabriel said. “It is definitely challenging due to the line of work we are in, and it is definitely demanding, but it shows what kind of a man you are.”
One of the challenges Gabriel faces on recruiting duty is balancing the demanding work schedule with the needs of his growing family. He expressed his desire to put in the right amount of time at work to allow him to be successful while fulfilling his responsibilities as a father.
With Gabriel at work, Mayra has spent a lot of time with Emmanuel. Mayra described some of the joys and challenges associated with parenthood.
“Being a mother is joyful," she said. "It is also challenging, but it definitely adds more of a responsibility, looking after another human. It is joyful, but getting into a routine with a baby, being away from family, and not working for now are some of the things we have to face.”
While there are challenges that come with having a newborn, Gabriel and Mayra look forward to the future they will create for their son. Mayra mentioned that the holiday season is something she looks forward to because she will be able to see the joy of her son as they celebrate holidays as a family.
“Overall, my instinct with my son is to actually have a relationship with him that I never had with my father for the past 27 years,” said Gabriel. “Being there for my son and supporting him while guiding his as much as I could through adulthood: that is overall my goal for him -- and to be better than I am.”
