The NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support (NAVSUP WSS) Equal Employment Opportunity Activity Committee (EEOAC) has hosted the Steps for Success program in Philadelphia for the past 14 years. The current ‘max-telework’ environment provided an opportunity for the committee to lean in and host the program virtually for the first time since its inception.

The virtual program was comprised of three seminars: Panel Interview, Emotional Intelligence, and Resume Writing. Designed to help personnel better themselves professionally, the program aimed to make employees more competitive for career advancement. By hosting the program on Microsoft (MS) Teams, the reach was expanded from just Philadelphia, to include Mechanicsburg and Norfolk employees increasing the average attendance to over 200 people per seminar.

“Now more than ever, it is imperative to understand how to ace a panel interview, how to maximize your personal and professional growth with emotional intelligence, and how to write a quality government resume. Each of these skills are all Steps for Success,” explained Cassandre Luberus, EEOAC Chair.

Step 1, Panel Interview, was held June 25. This seminar focused on teaching various techniques for panel interviewing and featured command supervisors as panelists. Panelists shared tips for employees to stand out during their next interview, which included how to prepare for the interview and how to best express their job successes in a limited timeframe.

Step 2, Emotional Intelligence, was held on June 30. Leni Uddyback-Fortson, a U.S. Department of Labor Public Affairs Regional Director by trade and Communication Strategy Consultant by practice, returned this year, for the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) seminar. Thanks to the quick adaptation to MS Teams, Uddyback-Forston presented to 247 employees. Covering topics such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, she conveyed how EQ influences professional success.

Their third and final step, Resume Writing, was held on Jul. 9. Presented by the NAVSUP WSS Workforce Planning department, provided employees with a thorough understanding of government resumes. Presenters covered government resume content, format expectations, how to use the USAJOBs website, and they addressed numerous questions on hiring actions including: Schedule A, Veterans preference, and understanding the questionnaire portion of the application process.

“I learned a lot of things that I did not know before after attending the Steps for Success program. For example, I was always taught that our resumes had to be long. It was refreshing to hear that lengthier resumes are no longer preferred,” said Cynthia Smith, Program Analyst.

Ed Thompson, a Logistics Management Specialist said, “This was very good insight, thank you to the EEOAC team for hosting!”

The highly anticipated Steps for Success program would not be possible without the hard work of the committee members themselves.

“I was able to work with an amazing committee team and we were able to execute a great program using our new virtual environment,” said Tanya Thompson, co-chair for the Panel Interview seminar. “I would encourage everyone to support and participate in EEOAC events. Participating in EEOAC programs will give you the opportunity to learn so much about your capabilities and the capabilities of others.”

Even in the max telework environment, the NAVSUP WSS EEOAC found a way to bring people together through learning during these unprecedented times.

The annual Steps for Success program is sponsored by the NAVSUP WSS EEOAC. The EEOAC is comprised of a diverse group of employees with different experiences, goals, and ideas, working together to produce programs and events that enrich the culture and education within NAVSUP WSS.
