SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego’s (NMCSD) Immunization Clinic has remained open, and has continued to see patients during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Both active duty service members and their beneficiaries are encouraged to walk into the clinic for their immunizations and vaccines, as the clinic does not schedule appointments.
“We’ve been fully-operational during the entire COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lt. Wilmarie Mercado-Mattei, NMCSD’s Immunization Clinic’s nurse manager. “During a pandemic, regular immunizations can prevent other outbreaks.”
Other, concurrent outbreaks may stress the military healthcare system.
Keeping up-to-date with scheduled vaccinations will help ensure that all necessary resources are dedicated to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and not a simultaneous outbreak like measles or meningitis, said Mercado-Mattei.
Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Oswald Cacatian, who has been NMCSD’s Immunization Clinic’s leading petty officer since November, thoroughly enjoys his work.
“Keeping people up to date on their shots is a small part of what preventative medicine technicians do,” said Cacatian. “This is a big command with a lot of patients to see, and I’m always learning something new about delivering patient care.”
NMCSD is dedicated to keeping Sailors, staff and beneficiaries safe year-round.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training, and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
