More than 40 leaders of the North Carolina National Guard's (NCNG) 113th Sustainment Brigade "Steel Brigade" (SB) met at Fort Fisher National Guard Training Center the week of July 20 at Kure Beach, North Carolina. The leaders planned future training events, professional development and how best to prepare Soldiers and their families for the next year.

"A commander can't do it alone it takes a team," said North Carolina Army National Guard (NCARNG) Maj. David Walliser, 113th SB.

It was a relaxed environment with most in civilian clothes, some contributed remotely by conference call and all practiced social distancing. Professional discussions and question and answer sessions with subject matter experts focused on topics including from training, operations, human resources and behavioral health.

"Trust is a force multiplier," Walliser said.

Several senior leaders shared what they had learned over years of service with numerous state, national and international deployments with recently appointed company commanders and company first sergeants, the senior enlisted Soldier.

"Know your Soldiers, know yourself," said Lt. Col. Brian Castle, 113th SB administrative Officer.

These new leaders will be responsible for preparing the 113th SB Soldiers for future training and readiness for deployments if called.

"I didn't understand how powerful the voice of company command is, it carries a lot of weight at the state (NCNG headquarters) level," said Walliser.

It is not all theory and lessons from hard experience, the day to day practical work of training, supplying, preparing Soldiers for duty continued as officers and noncommissioned officers met via conference call with their peers across the state.

"You go above and beyond and everything goes smoothly," said NCARNG Command Sgt. Maj. Darren Lewis assigned to 113th Special Troops Battalion, 113th Sustainment Brigade headquartered in Asheboro, North Carolina.

Fort Fisher is a full service training facility for NCNG, other National Guard units, Department of Defense, federal, state and local agencies.
