While dining facility personnel are often overlooked as heroes in the U.S. Air Force story, one outstanding Airman shows how commitment to her craft earned her an Air Force-level award.

Senior Airman Amy Sherwood, 633rd Force Support Squadron Crossbow Dining Facility food service accountant, is the recipient of the 2020 Arthur J. Myers Food Service Excellence Award.

The Arthur J. Myers Award, named after one of the most influential members of the services career field, is bestowed to junior enlisted who demonstrate excellence, commitment and outstanding leadership in the area of food and beverage operation.

“I was in total shock when I found out I had won,” Sherwood said. “It still hasn’t fully hit me to be honest. I am very grateful for everyone who has encouraged and pushed me to get out of my comfort zone, because without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

After joining the Air Force in June of 2018 with hopes of a career in the medical field, Sherwood got assigned to Joint Base Langley-Eustis as a force support Airmen.

“I have fallen in love with services because we have so many different opportunities and can really make a difference in every mission,” Sherwood said. “My experience at JBLE so far has been incredible. My leadership has been nothing but supportive and is always pushing me to be more than I thought I could be.”

Sherwood’s commitment to service and leadership qualities earned her multiple Chef of the Month awards at the Crossbow Dining Facility, an Airman of the Quarter Award in 2019 and the Below The Zone (BTZ) award which allowed her to put on Senior Airman six months earlier than projected.

Sherwood embodies the Whole Airman Concept by not only going above and beyond at work, but by also dedicating time to involvement in the local community. She is a member of the Varsity Booster club, the Innovation Team, the FSS Booster club and also helps with the Voting Assistance Program.

When asked about the first troop he has supervised, Staff Sgt. Cyle Greening, 633rd FSS Crossbow Dining Facility shift leader, had nothing but praises to sing about Sherwood.

“Sherwood hit the ground running when she got to Langley Air Force Base, from quickly learning her job and duties, to mastering those skills with ease and leading shifts as an Airman First Class,” Greening said. “In my opinion, Sherwood deserves every bit of this award with all that it entails. I am truly proud of her!”

Recipients of the Arthur J. Myers award will receive a week of formal training at the Culinary Institute of America’s Greystone campus in San Antonio, Texas, tentatively scheduled for September 19-26, 2020.

“I am very much looking forward to the training,” Sherwood said. “I am not the most talented cook so learning something new I can not only bring to my job and help other airmen learn, but I can also try new things for my family, will be great.”

Along with the praises from her supervisor, Lt. Col. Jomia Blas, 633rd FSS commander, also recognized Sherwood’s commitment to her craft.

“Sherwood has displayed an incredible amount of dedication to become one of the Air Force’s best,” said Blas. “Her desire to continually foster innovation and increase our mission readiness exemplifies “Excellence in All We Do” and we could not be more proud. Congratulations Senior Airman Sherwood!”
