NORFOLK, VA (NNS) – On Monday 10 August 2020 USS Normandy moved from Norfolk naval base to Marine Hydraulics International (MHI) in preparation for her yearlong maintenance availability.
Normandy will undergo 12 months of repairs and modernization before returning to the fleet in 2021. Maintenance periods like this provide the ship with the ability to serve the Navy long into the future despite being 30 plus years old.
“This is an opportunity to pivot our focus, Normandy’s recent past is overflowed with accomplishments, but we need to turn our focus to the future.” Said Capt. Charles Hampton
This is USS Normandy’s first long term maintenance availability in over four years. In that time she deployed twice in support of Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group to the Second, Fifth and Sixth Fleet area of responsibilities, while also completing two training cycles.
Normandy, homported in Norfolk, Virginia, is the Air and Missile Defense Commander for Carrier Strike Group Eight.
