    Joint Multinational Readiness Center

HOHENFELS, Germany —The Hohenfels Training Area played host to the very first Leader Training Program. Coordinated by the Mustangs Observer Coach/Trainers Team and spear headed by the Civilian Coaches commonly referred to as “Gray Beards”; worked hand in hand with The commanders and staff of “Send Me” 2nd Brigade 3rd Infantry Division out of Ft. Stewart, Georgia.

The eight day training program, designed by the Gray Beards afforded members of the brigade and battalion staff the opportunity to recognize and ensure commanders intent, identify war fighting functions, identify commanders and staff training objectives and validation of standard operating procedures. They also provide a special Command Sergeant Major and Senior Leader Development Program.

“This is all about fulfilling Brig. Gen. Christopher Norrie’s expectations of LTP and how we improve a combat readiness in the army’s brigade combat teams,” said U.S. Army Retired Maj. Gen. Mike Milano head civilian coach at JMRC.

Armed with 18 highly motivated civilian coaches lead the charge to ensure 3rd ID was well prepared. For the civilian coaches, this was the perfect opportunity to provide the wealth of knowledge and experience totaling over thirty years to the future of the force. Providing the intellect and real-world knowledge from battalion all the way up to brigade special staff’s military decision-making process.

“Through every step of the process we provide constant and consistent over the shoulder coaching,” said Milano. “We provide suggestions as to how they might want to move on aspects of the process, and we provide formal classes that can also be presented to our allies and partners who train in the box and are not accustomed to our doctrine.”

One particular block of instruction would be the Command Sergeant Major and Senior Leaders class that allows Senior Leaders of the Observer Coach/Trainers Teams at JMRC the opportunity to inform them on what they will see in “The Box” during rotations. The OC/T’s covered everything from planning, force maneuvering and Fires. And though he was participating in the class, the 2nd Brigade Command Sgt. Maj Jabari Williams contributed his experience and knowledge to the class as well.

“What this LTP provided was an environment for my leaders in this organization to learn and grow,” said Williams.” Also, this allowed us to bond with the OC/T’s and our host nation allies as a cohesive team.”

Following the LTP the brigade would then present their command and the gray beards with the Combined Arms Rehearsal an incredibly detailed and thorough plan of execution while in the box during the exercise. This allowed the units to take all they had learned and address and correct their mistakes, while affording the gray beards the opportunity to give feed back

“Everyone needs that feedback and we provide that objective feedback,” said Milano. “We also conduct after action reviews and that provides them areas for improvement before they move into the box, and to come and train at JMRC is a tremendous opportunity.”

Milano feels that units going through this LTP prior too rotation have a better advantage over those who do not.

“Just to watch the evolution of this Brigade from day one to day 7 is a pretty gratifying experience, they definitely got better but more importantly they identified their own short comings and initiated fixes to help mitigate the shortages,” Milano said.

With the LTP complete and Combined Resolve close on the horizon, stay tuned for how “Send Me” 2nd Brigade 3rd ID puts those lessons into play against the challenges up ahead.
