JOINT BASE CAPE COD, Mass. - Trucks move and park in different places on the pavement and grass as members of the 164th Transportation Battalion, Massachusetts National Guard prepare to perform recovery and preparation training for their military vehicles, here, at Camp Edwards, on August 9, 2020. As the vehicles park and Soldiers get out, non commissioned officers gather their Soldiers in squads to instruct them.
Training the soldiers to perform these tasks is necessary for missions to continue to be successful.
“We were utilized a lot for the coronavirus missions, and we didn't have all of the personnel for the mission itself,” said Sgt. Matthew Gluchacki, an instructor at the 1060th Transportation Company out of Framingham, Mass.
Vehicle readiness is important for transportation units as their vehicles are crucial to the majority of the missions they perform. These missions include flood response, and transporting medical goods in response to the coronavirus.
Gluchacki instructs his Soldiers on preventative maintenance checks and services (PMCS) on the different vehicles available for hands-on practice. Training these soldiers on a variety of trucks they might use is good for their confidence and ability when not in a learning environment.
“So now, getting familiarized with the newer soldiers and training them on the equipment, if another pandemic happened, we'd have more bodies and more soldiers to utilize to assist with the pandemic,” said Gluchacki.
The goal that Gluchacki wants to meet is more Soldiers confident in their jobs. During training and on missions he wants his Soldiers to remain healthy by wearing face masks to ensure the training continues smoothly.
Transportation units rely on Soldiers being aware of danger while driving and are trained to handle difficulties that might hurt the success of the mission. Training like this makes sure that leaders and Soldiers are ready for anything that may impact the mission.
