WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (NNS) – First Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiment (1st NELR) held a change of command ceremony on Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex, Aug. 5th. Capt. Kurt D. Williams relieved Capt. Nathan C. Johnston, who served at the helm of 1st NELR since Feb. 2018.
Mark Sakowski, Chief of Staff, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG), initiated the event saying "The change of command ceremony is a product of a rich time-honored naval tradition in which custom has established this ceremony be formal and impressive, designed to strengthen the respect for authority which is vital to any military organization."
Due to current COVD-19 guidelines, social distancing was in force with limited personnel in attendance.
The presiding officer for the ceremony was Rear Adm. Jacquelyn McClelland. McClelland thanked Capt. Johnston for his outstanding service to 1st NELR and NAVELSG. McClelland further welcomed Capt. Williams to the team.
Johnston and Williams then read their orders and approached McClelland to execute the change of command. Williams then assumed command as the sixth commodore of 1st NELR.
"In this time of great power competition, NAVELSG has continued a lengthy legacy”, said Williams as he addressed 1st NELR for the first time, “over 50 years, of providing professional cargo handlers worldwide. It's under that guise that I strive and will strive to continue that impressive legacy as we move through these challenging and uncertain times."
Williams ended his remarks by saying, "I'm excited and committed to being here and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
1st NELR provides oversight of Navy Cargo Handling Battalion ONE to ensure they are manned, trained, maintained and equipped to provide programmed capabilities. It also provides Command and Control and operational tasking over assigned units’ operational missions and provides expeditionary support for logistics, cargo handling and port operations.
1st NELR is subordinate to NAVELSG, who is a vital enabler of maritime prepositioning, joint logistics over-the-shore operations, and maritime forces ashore providing expeditionary cargo handling services for surface, air, and terminal operations, tactical fueling, and ordnance handling.
