CHANNEL ISLANDS, Calif. – Handcuffing, cleaning and handling a weapon, self-defense, apprehending a subject, active shooter drills and clearing a room were all skills learned by Airmen at the Security Forces Augmentee Training course hosted by the 146th Airlift Wing, August 3-6, 2020.
Tech. Sgt.’s Fernando Herrera, 195th Wing Security Forces NCOIC and Joaquin A. Wooten, 195th Wing Security Forces training NCOIC, instructed many of the classroom and practical sessions to prepare themselves to teach and train Airmen within the 195th. Both are experienced SF Airmen who spent years with the 146th AW Security Forces Squadron at Channel Islands Air National Guard Station before moving over full-time to the 195th in March of this year.
“When our Airmen get tasked for an emergency activation, they are going to go out there with a foundational set of knowledge and some skills that they can add to their tool belt,” said Wooten. “We’re going to have them mentally and physically fit and properly prepared.”
Until now, all members of the 195th Wing needed to train for activation and qualify on their weapons by going to other wings for support. With the addition of Staff Sgt. Alex Tranchina, 195th Wing Combat Arms Training and Maintenance instructor, this month, the 195th will have a complete training team to be able to support and train Wing personnel.
“Since the 195th squadrons are spread throughout the state of California, having a SF training team that can travel to each squadron and use local resources, makes it more manageable and possible to get the SF program moving in the right direction,” said Master Sgt. Keith Ford, 146th AW SFS unit training manager.
The highest priority for the SF training team is training Wing personnel through the Security Forces Augmentee/Tier II Training program. This is an adaptive course designed for Airmen whose primary jobs are not in Security Forces to teach them the basic knowledge of law enforcement practices.
"It's like opening a book and learning the first few chapters,” Ford said. “There's still plenty to learn, but at least they have a foundation to work with, should we need them to augment staffing for a Security Forces unit who deployed or we just need extra manning for an elevated threat level on base or elsewhere."
They are teaching a uniform type of training that is Air Force wide, said Herrera. Whether they trained over at Beale or in San Diego, 195th Airmen are going to have the same foundation as the Airmen from Channel Islands or from March Air Reserve Base.
“We are here to make this Wing and all its components prepared for any and all possibilities of activation,” said Herrera. “We will do everything we can within our power to prepare and to teach everything we can. Whatever it takes, we are going to get as many people ready for anything that may happen.”
