ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England - - The 48th Fighter Wing’s Component Maintenance Squadron is dedicated to finding innovative solutions to improve mission readiness. The CMS Avionics
Intermediate Section (AIS) has introduced a process improvement projected to save the U.S. Air Force more than $297,000 this year.

During a recent deployment to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Avionics Airmen identified a number of logistical issues that had significant impacts on their mission effectiveness. One such issue was inbound
aircraft parts arriving at their deployed location in unserviceable condition – forcing work to be outsourced to other locations, and then brought back to Al Udeid.

“We took a look at our processes at RAF Lakenheath, and determined we had the capacity to aid the entire career field’s warfighting mission,” said Senior Master Sgt. Christopher Fletcher, 48th CMS maintenance superintendent.

The designation of RAF Lakenheath as a deployed location reduces Air Force operating costs by streamlining the supply chain, and abating the need to send equipment to multiple work centers. The
installation’s AIS is also geographically positioned to support other deployed locations with similar service requirements, and boasts the capacity to accept the increased workload.

Global avionics support operations are an essential function of the U.S. Air Force’s war-fighting capabilities.

“Being deployed to RAF Lakenheath instead of down range is a great money-saving opportunity,” said Staff Sgt. Clark Clement, an avionics technician deployed to Royal Air Force Lakenheath from Kadena Air
Base, Japan. “We’re also able to exchange information and ideas between bases, which is a huge step forward."

The Liberty Wing continues to improve combat readiness by innovating on established practices, increasing interoperability between bases, and reducing costs to allow avionics technicians to better
    support their mission.
