PACIFIC OCEAN – Fire Controlman 2nd Class David K. Thomas, an Omro, Wis. native serving aboard Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), was recognized as Vinson’s “Sailor of the Day” in a ceremony on the ship’s bridge, August 20. Thomas was selected for this honor from among over 3,000 Sailors in the ship’s crew.
Thomas works as a system technician in the combat systems department aboard Vinson, and he has been leading the upgrade and testing of the ship’s self-defense system for the past four months. Thomas graduated from Omro High School in 2013, and he enlisted in the Navy in 2015.
As Thomas continues to serve aboard Vinson, he is proud to be from Omro and looks forward to seeing friends and family.
“I’m proud to represent where I’ve come from and looking forward to sharing all my stories with my friends and family back at home,” said Thomas.
Vinson (CVN 70) is en route to San Diego after completing a 17-month scheduled docking planned incremental availability in Bremerton, Washington, during which the ship underwent a complete restoration and a system retrofit to accommodate F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter mission capabilities.
