BEAUMONT, Texas - Texas Guardsmen from the 6th WMD Civil Support Team are performing a survey using specialized testing equipment to sample air quality for possible toxic contaminants in residential areas in Port Arthur, Port Neches and surrounding areas.
Partnered with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, these Guardsmen are looking to see if any hazardous materials like toxic industrial products were released following damages sustained from Hurricane Laura.
There are no reports of chemical leaks anywhere in the impacted area, so this survey is proactive, designed to confirm the safety of Texans living in the area.
“We are not here working independently,” said Texas National Guard Capt. Nina Vanyo, Civil Support Team acting officer in charge. “We are here to support TCEQ in helping the community.”
The information the team collects is sent electronically in real time back to TCEQ for required monitoring to ensure the safety of area residents.
The 12 person team is working in two teams to study storm impacts. It’s an important mission that requires a unique skillset, one that this team says they train for every year to ensure they are always ready to respond when needed.
“Each year we rehearse the Natural Disaster Operational Workgroup (NDOW) process, which pays off when we and TCEQ respond together,” said Vanyo.
