SAN DIEGO – Yeoman 3rd Class Michael A. Gonzales, a native of San Antonio, is serving as an office clerk in the administration department aboard Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), and he is responsible for preparing, typing and routing correspondence as well as organizing and maintaining paper and electronic records. In July, his accomplishments were recognized when he was selected as Vinson’s Junior Sailor of the Quarter, an award given to Sailors who go above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrate the highest standards of work ethic and military bearing.
Gonzales graduated from William Howard Taft High School in 2012. After injuring his neck in a car accident, he was inspired to reconsider his path in life and enlisted in the Navy in November 2017.
“During physical therapy, I made a promise to myself that if I came out of it one hundred percent, I would do something unselfish,” said Gonzales. “I have always wanted to be in the Navy, so I chose to serve my country.”
Gonzales reported to Vinson in April 2018 and has been working hard ever since. He credits his selection as JSOQ to the advice he has received from mentors throughout his career.
“I believe I was selected because of the guidance from my chain of command, from the bottom all the way to the top,” said Gonzales.
Looking forward, Gonzales said that he plans on making the Navy a career for life, and he eventually plans on earning a commission as an officer.
“I love the Navy and what it stands for,” said Gonzales. “I want to do the whole 20 years.”
While Gonzales excels at his job, he said that he could not do it without the support of his loved ones in San Antonio.
“I am very proud to be from San Antonio, and I am thankful for all the support I have received from my friends and family back home,” said Gonzales.
