The Desert Rogues of 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, conducted the Thunder Run competition, September 18, 2020, at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
The Thunder Run is a platoon competition that honors the battalion’s history and instills pride amongst the Desert Rogues.
“Thunder Run honors past Rogue leaders who conducted combat operations in Korea, Desert Storm, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan by testing our Soldiers’ Warrior Skills and Battle Drills,” said Lt. Col. Alexis Perez-Cruz, commander of 1-64 Armor.
The Desert Rogues began their day at 4:00 a.m. and organized at LSA Sparta with their packing lists, while following COVID-19 protocol.
The competition included a 12 mile ruck march, Call for Fire, Medical Evacuation test, Stress Shoot, history and general knowledge test, assembly and disassembly of multiple weapons, personal equipment layout and physical training.
The teams were timed on how fast they could finish the events. If a Soldier failed to meet the standard during an event or got a question wrong, their finishing time for the whole competition would be negatively impacted.
“I like it because everybody is bonding and we get motivated because everyone’s in it together,” said Pfc. Braedin Hann, 1-64 Armor, during the competition.
Each group completed the stations and returned to the start point by 3:45 p.m for an awards ceremony.
“The Rogues built camaraderie and tested their resolve,” said Perez-Cruz. “I couldn’t think of a better way to end my tenure as Rogue 6 and it’s been an honor to lead this battalion over the last 22 months!”
