As part of our month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, today we are highlighting West Virginia Army National Guard Lt. Col. Jason Diaz, an armor officer with the 1st Squadron, 150th Cavalry Regiment.

Diaz has been in the West Virginia National Guard since 2002 and decided to join because he “wanted to be a part of something that made a difference. I liked the camaraderie that you see in the military and it seemed like an organization that took care of its people.”

According to Diaz, his favorite part of serving is the people he serves with.

“The military is full of incredible Soldiers that are experts at their job and that go above and beyond what is expected,” he said. “As a leader, it’s those individuals you encounter throughout your career that help you grow and succeed. You build a bond with the people you serve with that is like no other. It’s truly hard to describe to those that don’t serve what that bond is like.”

Highlighting Hispanic Heritage Month provides an opportunity to recognize the significant diversity that makes up the U.S. military and the National Guard, and the contributions those of Hispanic decent continue to make in defense of our nation, says Diaz.

“The Army is truly a diverse and inclusive organization,” he said. “The recognition of the different ethnicities and genders that make us the organization we are is special. There are so many dedicated and extremely hard working Hispanic American Soldiers in our ranks today; over 15% of our force is comprised of Hispanic Americans and they should be celebrated. This observance makes me proud to be a part of this organization and it shows that we not only fight together but we stand proudly together and recognize outstanding service regardless of the culture we come from.”
