BAGHDAD — "The inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world." These hollowed words from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ratified by the United Nations in 1948 echoed through a hallway filled with Soldiers from the Iraqi Special Operation Force's 1st Brigade on Aug. 13.
The commanding officer of the 1st Brigade, Maj. Gen. Fadhel Al-Barwari, sat attentively in the front row flanked by men under his command. Members of the Iraqi press recorded the event, which was preceded by a demonstration of ISOF's capabilities and tactics.
In the past, Fadhel invited the Red Cross to speak to his Soldiers about the value of human rights. Doctors and lawyers on his staff also taught his Soldiers about the United Nations declaration.
"We train to treat all people, even suspected terrorists, with respect," Fadhel said. "I want to treat them the same way I treat my family because they are innocent until proven guilty by an Iraqi court."
"I also want the world to know that Iraq values human dignity and individual rights," he noted with a sense of pride.
The lecturer concluded his remarks by emphasizing the first article of the United Nations declaration: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
After the lecture, the Soldiers began shouting and dancing as Fadhel stood to thank the lecturer.
