SUMPTER SMITH JNGB, Ala. – Senior Airman Gabriel Smith won both Airman of the Quarter and Airman of the Year (Airman Category) for 2019. He is one of four members of the 117th Intelligence Squadron to win awards.
Smith is an all source intelligence analyst, compiling information from large sets of data sources and interpreting it into discernible intelligence for the intelligence community. His work is time sensitive, complex and demanding, and he excels at it having previously been awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for his work.
He sees a direct connection between his work and the refueling mission. “Intelligence, in a way, can drive the operations tempo overseas and in other areas… into which refueling support would be a high priority at that point,” he said. Air Combat Command (ACC) and Air Mobility Command (AMC) are always closely linked in any operational environment.
Smith not only demands of himself a high level of achievement professionally, but also strives equally as hard in his own personal development. Smith is pursuing a B.S. in computer science at Troy University, and expects to graduate in December. Due to his exemplary nature, Smith was selected as an officer in the United States Air Force and following the completion of his B.S. in computer science, he aspires to serve his career field by becoming an Intelligence Officer.
