HOHENFELS, GERMANY - Iowa Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to Troop B, 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, conducted Crowd Riot Control (CRC) training at Hohenfels, Germany, on Oct. 29, 2020.
“It’s great to be out in the rain,” said U.S. Army Capt. Alexander Keller, commander of Troop B. “We spent our time in [restriction of movement]. The guys were hungry to get out and train.”
Keller spent the rainy day in Germany learning the ins and outs of CRC training right along with the Soldiers he commands. While Keller would normally be in the background calling the shots, today he wanted to be part of the action.
“We’re working on formations, order of movement and working on commands,” Keller said. “We worked on strikes right out of the gate. A lot of it is shield work and striking work.”
The Soldiers trained in padded protective gear with plastic shields and batons, mud and gravel caking their boots.
German soldiers also played a key role as instructors and role players in the CRC training. The instructors used concerted verbal commands, soft projectiles and physical resistance to provide realistic scenarios for the Soldiers to react to.
“It’s really great to have them here to guide us,” said Sgt. Eric Holtorf, a member of Troop B. “They do things efficiently and effectively. They’re a lot of help when it comes to things we can do better or things they want to refine.”
