SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego's (NMCSD) Labor and Delivery Department receives security and cosmetic upgrades to enhance patient satisfaction.
NMCSD's Labor and Delivery has received an infant security system which allows staff to accurately track the location of a newborn using sensors throughout the ward, decreasing the risk of abduction.
"The first reason for these changes was for infant security," said Lt. Cmdr. Stacie Groves, NMCSD's Labor and Delivery Department head. "Safety is our number one priority, and we always want to make sure every mother and baby is safe."
The Labor and Delivery Department has also received new paint and flooring to update and refresh the ward's appearance.
Groves said the goal for the refreshed look was to make the ward seem brighter and more of a welcoming environment. She said she wants patients to walk in and see the care that they put into the unit.
During the renovations, staff operated from an alternate location, and combined its labor, delivery and antepartum services into one ward. Upon the reopening of the updated ward, the services have remained combined.
During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, NMCSD's Labor and Delivery Department has implemented three negative-pressure rooms to properly care for sick or at-risk patients, minimizing exposure and ensuring staff and patient safety.
"We're just so happy and thrilled that we get to provide good care, and that our beneficiaries trust us to bring their little ones into this world," said Groves. "We hope that our patients feel safe and loved, and that they feel the honor that we feel caring for them."
NMCSD's Labor and Delivery Department's updates are just one example of the hospital's continued legacy of being a premier, military medicine site. The hospital continues to prove that it is dedicated to providing the best possible care for its patients.
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
