CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan --With the holidays just around the corner, U.S. Marines at the Camp Foster Post Office, sort mail around the clock during their busiest time of year to ensure packages are delivered on time.
The Marines and host nation employees organize truckloads of inbound and outbound worldwide shipments well beyond the post office’s marked hours. Upcoming key dates are important to remember to ensure packages and presents arrive to loved ones safely and on time for the holidays.
“The Marines at postal know what needs to be accomplished and the hard work that is to come,” Cpl. Daovin Stewart, the training noncommissioned officer for unit mail shipping and register mail. “That type of camaraderie and teamwork is what ultimately leads to mission success.”
If you plan to send any mail to the United States, with an arrival time prior to the holidays, the cutoff date to send packages in slow mail is Dec. 15. If mail is sent in 1st class mail, that date is Dec. 18. In addition, if it is sent through priority mail, it is Dec. 19, and through priority mail express the date is Dec. 23.
Monday through Friday, 11 Marines work diligently from 0730-1800 to unload and ship potentially thousands of packages daily, explains Staff Sgt. Diana Murrell, the staff noncommissioned officer in charge for custodian of postal effects. She also said to expect longer lines and delays in shipments due to the excess load of packages during the busiest season of the year.
“We’ve been training for this all year,” said Murrell. “Knowing that we made an impact on someone by giving them a package is the best part about being a postal Marine. At the end of the day we are building morale for Marines and families.”
